Hello, we are The Red Hot Chilli Records a team of creative students looking to spice up the Creative Challenge scene with some heat and music. Here is an insight into our adventure around Edinburgh and all the exciting challenges we got up to!

I. STORYBOOK/
at STORY UK

Story Uk is a creative digital agency that work to design campaigns, brands and websites for a diverse range of clients. Located in the heart of Edinburgh this company is always looking to inspire with creativity.

Upon arriving at Story we were greeted and taken to meet with directors Heather and Susan who discussed much about the company and how they ended up working there. When meeting with potential employees to join the team they look for people with a great personality and a flare for creativity.

They next briefed us with our first challenge of the day to design a radio advertisement to promote M&S Bank’s pet insurance with their current 12 months for the price of 9 promotion.

After a lot of brainstorming and planning we came up with a script for our radio ad that would capture the attention of any radio listener. Two pets discussing the recent gossip in their apartment building of an uninsured hamster getting into a hamster-ball related accident.

From our first destination we learnt that when looking for work in the field of design, creativity can get you further than you think!

With the clock now ticking we hopped on the bus to our next destination.

II. HALL OF FAME/
at 442 DESIGN

442 Design is a design company that focuses on interior and graphic design. When it comes to design seamless integration of the two disciplines is at the heart of their projects when creating a space or brand for a business.

We met with Ian a senior graphic design at the company who went into a bit more detail about their past projects and clients. Past work have included a multi-purpose suite for BBC Scotland, designing the backstage area of the SSE Hydro and designing the space for the Arsenal Adidas Armoury.

Our challenge at 442 Design was to redesign the augmented reality space currently found in the Arsenal Adidas Armoury.

We created the Arsenal “Hall of Fans” in which customers at the store could take part in an interactive, virtual challenge. Participants could compete against virtual versions of their favourite players, past or present, in challenges such replicating a legendary winning goal or testing their keepie-uppie skills. The top competitor ranks top of the leaderboard adding a competitive edge.

III. CODES/
at CODECLAN

The clue this time: Scotland’s first award winning digital academy. The Campbell’s, Fraser’s and Mckenzie’s will feel at home here.

_ O _ _ _ A _ And if you haven’t filled in the blanks already, our next stop was Code Clan.

It was time to get back on the bus, down Princes street and head up around the castle.

Code Clan is an academy that offers training in digital skills from programming to UX. They have a number of teachers running courses to help students learn the skills they need to start or further careers in this digital world. Once there we were welcomed by Technical Learning Support and Community Outreach Leader, Tony. He showed us around Code Clan introducing us to the different areas of the company and how it all runs.

The third challenge certainly put our mathematical and problem-solving skills to the test. This test certainly got our heads in a twist but we soon came to the answer with a bit of focus. What was particularly interesting about this challenge was that it is used by Code Clan as a problem to test new students.

IV. PANIC ROOM/
at CREATIVE EDINBURGH

Our next clue led us right next door, so not too far to travel! After a few short steps we arrived at Creative Edinburgh. We were welcomed by Katherine Warren the Events Producer who told us a bit more about what they do. Creative Edinburgh is a place that helps creatives connect with one another whether it’s to find people with different skillsets to collaborate with or simply a space to meet. They hold events and meet ups which are a great way to help get people mixing with like-minded, creative folk.

After discussing Creative Edinburgh, Kath presented us with a challenge to really get us thinking outside the box. In front of us was box full of brightly coloured ping-pong balls each with a different word wrote on them. From the box we each picked a word at random. The words we got were: floor, wall, padlock and water. From this we had to come up absolutely anything so long as we used these words. It could be a product, an app, a game an experience, anything at all.

From this we came up with an escape game in which participants attempt to escape a room with walls closing in on them through a padlocked door. They must retrieve a key for the padlock from a hose/water puzzle and if they don't succeed in time the floor opens up beneath them.

The second part of the challenge got us thinking about all the people you would need get involved to complete the different elements of the project. This got us really thinking about the variety of roles to cover in any creative project and how Creative Edinburgh is such excellent resource in the city for connecting people.

V. RADIO GA GA/
at BBC SCOTLAND

The final stop in our creative journey was BBC Scotland. There we were met by Senior Producer, Esme Kennedy who gave us a glimpse into what goes on behind the scenes.

For our final challenge of the day we really got a feel for the fast-paced world of journalism as we were tasked with researching, planning and interviewing a member of the BBC. We were given a quick demonstration on how to operate the equipment in the studio and learnt about our interviewee. Our interviewee for the challenge was Monise Durrani producer for The Afternoon Show. Although the challenge seemed daunting to achieve in the short space of time we had, it was great fun and gave us a real flavour for broadcasting.

It was particularly interesting talking to Esme afterwards about the challenges they face with Radio as medium for delivering stories in a world full of digital platforms and the ways they are using social media as way to connect with a younger audience.

And if our trip to the BBC couldn’t get any better we were passed by Grant Stott as he headed home from a day in office!

To conclude, our last stop of the challenge was Whitespace, not easy to find, but where we shared our experiences of the challegenge and some laughs with the rest of the groups.

And here it concludes our journey and musical albums. We hope you enjoyed it!
